This year's featured country is not a country but a city, Los Angeles, a metropolis that up to a few year ago made up the world's seventh largest economy. A delegation of Los Angeles' best authors will represent the city. You would think the authors would be representative of the city's diverse community. Far from it. Too bad FIL representatives did not have the foresight to work with REFORMA librarians to select from among the best that Los Angeles has to offer. There will be a sprinkling of Latino authors there. Que lastima. So much for collaboration and mutual cooperation, and showcasing. But don't trust me on this one. See for yourself. See you at FIL 09 in Guadalajara.

REFORMA DC Chapter Holiday Party

Michelle Hinojosa Melencio

My fellow librarians--please help me spread the word to anyone you think may be interested about this event in DC!!! I've sent this email to the University of MD and DC SLA Chapter listservs, but you are welcome to forward this email to other listservs in the DC area. To those librarians not in the DC area, everyone knows a librarian in DC :), feel free to forward this to them as well!

The REFORMA DC Chapter is having a Holiday Reception at Catholic University on Tuesday, 12/16, from 5-7pm. Join us for food, fun, and to learn about all that REFORMA has to offer. Veteran Reformistas will be on hand to share their experiences in REFORMA and in improving library service to Latinos. If you would like to RSVP, or would like more details about our event next Tuesday, please check out http://tinyurl.com/reformadcholidayreception.

Membership is WAIVED the first year to library science students and only $5 the second year! For professional librarians and library support staff, membership ranges from $15-$40.

The goals of REFORMA include:

*Development of Spanish-language and Latino-oriented library collections;
*Recruitment of bilingual, multicultural library personnel;
*Promotion of public awareness of libraries and librarianship among Latinos;
*Advocacy on behalf of the information needs of the Latino community;
*Liaison to other professional organizations

Sincerely,
Michelle Melencio
REFORMA DC Chapter Secretary
